Daintree Climate And Weather
The distinctive climate of the Daintree is recognized in the local Aboriginal language. The Kuku Yalanji identify five seasons:
Kambar - wet time (late December - March)
Kabakada - winter rain (April - May)
Buluruiji - cold time with some rain (June - Sept)
Wungariji - hot time with little or no rain (Oct - Nov)
Jarramali - storm time (Nov - Dec)
The most popular season to visit the Daintree is during July and August. If you are planning to visit during these months, it is recommended that you book your accommodation before arrival.
October and November can often be the best months to visit the area. This is the time of year when the sea is usually calm, the crowds have gone, and the humidity is still relatively low.
The Wet Season has usually arrived for Feb and March. Torrential tropical downpours occur at this time of year and the humidity is high. The forest creeks flow freely and the rainforest is moist and lush. If you have a sense of adventure this is an ideal time to visit and experience the natural seasonal cycle of the “wet tropics”.
It can however rain at any time during the year, sometimes heavily, but this does not stop activities continuing. Most tour operators and accommodation houses provide raincoats or umbrellas for visitors who do not have their own.
Coastal breezes and the forest depths help create cooling natural breezes at night throughout the year. Many buildings in the area are designed to take advantage of the climate and capture these cooling breezes.
What To Bring
Travel light. You will need to bring sunglasses, sunhat and strong shoes for walking. Light casual clothes are all that is needed to eat in any of the local restaurants. A rain jacket or an umbrella is a good idea, and your swimsuit is essential, as there are lots of opportunities to swim in the creeks and beaches.
The locals live in shorts and t-shirt all year. You may need a long sleeve sweater for June and August, the time of the year the locals call cold, though it rarely drops below 14 degrees Celsius night.
