The Essence Of The Daintree - What makes the Daintree so special?

World Heritage

The Daintree is internationally recognized as a place of significant, natural beauty. TWO World Heritage Areas are located side by side in the Daintree - the Wet Tropics Rainforest and The Great Barrier Reef.

Wildlife

The Daintree wilderness is an unspoilt natural habitat and home to an abundant and diverse range of wildlife. The rivers, rainforest and coastline provide some of the best birdwatching and wildlife spotting experiences in Australia.

The Daintree Rainforest

The Daintree World Heritage Rainforest is believed to be more than 100 million years old, making it one of the oldest rainforests in the world. It is also one of the most diverse, with unique plants and animals found no-where else on earth

The Great Barrier Reef

The Daintree coastline is one of the closest stretches of the Queensland mainland to the Outer Great Barrier Reef, with Mackay and Undine Reefs being only a half hour boat trip from Cape Tribulation.

The Beaches Of The Daintree Coast

The beaches of the Daintree are “where the rainforest meets the reef” making them the perfect place for rest and relaxation - long deserted beaches for swimming, beach-combing, and doing absolutely nothing.

The History

Take a glimpse into the Daintree’s colourful past. Learn about the pioneers, the cedar timber getters of an earlier generation and the Daintree Blockade.

Kuku Yalanji

Welcome to Kuku Yalanji country. The area you are travelling through has great spiritual and cultural significance to our people’. Learn from the traditional owners of the country.

The Cassowary

The Daintree is a critical habitat and a ‘hot spot’ for the endangered Southern Cassowary. Their population density is relatively high and there is a good chance of sighting a cassowary.

Eco Certified Tourism

Tourism Eco-Certification identifies genuine nature tourism businesses and ecotourism products in Australia. Interact with local guides who are living their dream.

Solar Power

The Daintree Coast is the largest renewable energy community in Australia, with more than 200 households depending on renewable energy systems.

Climate & Weather

The Daintree climate is characterised by high temperatures, humidity and rainfall throughout the year to create an equatorial climate that promotes lush growth in the rainforests.

The Daintree Ferry

The only cable ferry in Tropical Australia and the gateway to one of the most scenic drives in the world. Drive onto the Daintree River Ferry and be taken to a place where the speed of civilization slows down.
